Forward Industries and RockawayX are backing OnRe, a new protocol designed to move reinsurance onto Solana's blockchain. The platform targets institutional participation by tokenizing insurance risk and capital flows on-chain.

Reinsurance, the practice of insurers hedging their own risk by purchasing coverage from other carriers, traditionally operates through opaque intermediaries and slow settlement cycles. OnRe flips this model. By running reinsurance transactions on Solana, the protocol reduces friction, accelerates capital deployment, and creates transparent pricing mechanisms for risk pools.

The investors' backing signals confidence that blockchain infrastructure can handle institutional-grade insurance operations. Solana's throughput and low transaction costs make it viable for high-volume risk transfers that would be cost-prohibitive on Ethereum or other chains. OnRe tokenizes risk tranches, allowing capital providers to directly participate in reinsurance pools without traditional insurance brokers.

The play fits a broader trend of moving financial infrastructure onchain. DeFi protocols have demonstrated that cryptocurrency networks can handle complex financial instruments, though insurance and reinsurance remain largely untapped. Institutional adoption has stalled in crypto largely due to custody, regulatory clarity, and operational complexity. OnRe tackles at least one piece: the backend plumbing.

The reinsurance market moves hundreds of billions annually. Even capturing a small percentage of flows would represent meaningful volume for Solana's ecosystem. However, the protocol faces real headwinds. Regulatory bodies view insurance as a highly licensed activity. Onchain reinsurance without traditional underwriting licenses or regulatory approval creates legal ambiguity. States and federal authorities have not yet clarified how blockchain-based risk transfer fits existing insurance frameworks.

Forward Industries and RockawayX are betting that transparency and capital efficiency outweigh regulatory risks. If OnRe gains traction with institutional players, it validates the thesis
