This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
Layer 2 solutions have become the default answer to Ethereum's scalability problem. Build on Arbitrum. Deploy to Optimism. Jump to Base. The messaging is consistent: these networks will unlock mainstream adoption by offering speed and affordability that the mainnet simply cannot. It's a compelling narrative. It's also incomplete.
The skepticism I'm raising here isn't about whether Layer 2s work technically. They do. The protocols function as advertised. Transaction throughput improves. Gas costs drop. Users experience faster finality. None of that is in question.
What deserves scrutiny is the implicit assumption baked into Layer 2 cheerleading: that solving speed and cost automatically solves adoption. The evidence for this equation is thinner than the marketing suggests.
Consider the actual usage patterns. When a Layer 2 network launches with fanfare, adoption curves often flatten after early enthusiasm. Activity concentrates among traders, arbitrageurs, and protocol farmers chasing incentives. General users remain thin on the ground. Why? Because speed and low fees alone don't create reasons to use blockchain applications if those applications don't solve problems people actually have.
A transaction that costs one cent instead of ten cents is still a transaction looking for a use case. That matters.
The ecosystem has also developed a secondary problem: fragmentation. Each Layer 2 operates as a separate settlement layer. Users must bridge between them. Bridges introduce complexity, risk, and their own friction costs. We're not solving the scalability trilemma so much as papering over it by creating multiple smaller networks. Whether that's progress or merely redistribution of the problem remains an open question that deserves more honest debate.
There's also the matter of centralization pressure. Many Layer 2s rely on sequencers that currently operate as centralized components. Some teams are working toward decentralized sequencing, but that work is ongoing and genuinely difficult. Selling Layer 2s as solutions while papering over sequencer centralization is intellectually inconsistent. It's not dishonest necessarily, but it's incomplete enough to qualify as misleading.
The financial incentive structure deserves examination too. Projects launching on Layer 2s often receive token incentives or grants from layer 2 foundations. This creates a built-in bias toward reporting positive metrics. Survivorship bias compounds the problem. Projects that fail or migrate disappear from discourse. We hear loudly from winners and their ecosystem cheerleaders. The graveyard stays quiet.
Then there's the assumption that developers will naturally migrate to whichever Layer 2 has the lowest fees. Economic theory suggests this should happen. Observed reality is messier. Network effects matter. Developer communities have momentum. Existing infrastructure has switching costs. The idea that Layer 2 competition will consolidate around one or two clear winners assumes more economic rationality than markets actually exhibit.
None of this argues against Layer 2 development. The research is legitimate. The engineering is real. The speed improvements are measurable. The argument here is narrower: that the narrative surrounding Layer 2s has calcified into something resembling inevitability, and that narrative deserves pushing back on.
Scaling matters. But scaling without clear product-market fit is just making things faster in the wrong direction. Layer 2s have created the technical capacity for mainstream adoption. Creating the actual demand for that capacity requires solving problems beyond speed and cost. That harder work still waits to be done.
The most honest thing the Layer 2 community could do right now is acknowledge what we don't yet know. Not what we can't do, but what we haven't figured out yet about why users should care.
