Bybit's Austrian payments arm has secured an e-money license from local regulators, clearing the path for the exchange to operate payment services across the European Union.

The subsidiary, Bybit Payments Austria, received approval to issue payment cards, process merchant transactions, enable open banking integrations, and facilitate peer-to-peer transfers. This license represents a major regulatory victory for the crypto exchange in Europe, where compliance remains fragmented across jurisdictions.

The Austrian e-money designation carries weight. It allows Bybit to operate under MiCA, the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, which went live in December 2023. MiCA creates a unified ruleset across all 27 member states, eliminating the need for country-by-country approvals for core payment services.

Bybit has aggressively pursued European expansion since MiCA's adoption. The exchange operates under a Markets in Crypto-Assets Service Provider license in various EU jurisdictions and has established multiple regional headquarters. This Austrian approval accelerates that strategy by embedding payment rails directly into the exchange's infrastructure.

The e-money license specifically matters for fiat on and off-ramps. Crypto exchanges depend on payment processing to convert between euros and digital assets. Bybit's Austrian arm can now issue its own cards and handle merchant payments, reducing reliance on third-party payment processors who often impose restrictions on crypto companies.

Card issuance presents the clearest revenue stream. Bybit joins other major exchanges like Kraken and Coinbase in offering branded debit products across Europe. These cards generate fees from transaction volume and interchange economics while deepening user engagement with the platform.
